What to expect in a treatment session

Each Healing Touch practitioner and client session will be unique and is influenced by the provider's training and experience, the health and needs of the client, and the environment and timeframe in which the treatment is taking place. Here we have addressed the progression of a Healing Touch intervention from the perspective of a typical session in an office environment.

As with other health-care appointments, detailed information about the patient’s health and health concerns will be discussed in the first visit. A treatment plan will be developed and goals will be set. The practitioner will also obtain client permission for direct touch during the session.

To begin, the patient will remain fully clothed and, generally, assisted to recline comfortably on a massage table. Modifications can be made for positioning during treatment to accommodate the environment and the needs and comfort of the patient. The client will be encouraged to relax, and rest or talk as it feels comfortable for them. Many patients enjoy a brief, refreshing nap during their treatment session.

During treatment, the practitioner may gently hold and/or lightly stroke different areas of the patient’s body. They may also use their hands in various positions and movements above and around the body. Practitioners respect the modesty and privacy of patients at all times, using only non-intimate direct touch when allowed and appropriate. Patients generally report the treatment experience as very relaxing with no discomfort.

To conclude the session, the Healing Touch provider will document and discuss their findings and encourage feedback from the patient regarding their treatment experience as well as any changes in their pre- and post-treatment health status. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled as appropriate.
